‘Āina Arts Teaching Cohort

A Professional Development Opportunity for Teachers

The ‘Āina Arts Teaching Cohort is a dynamic PD program focused on the creativity and growth of teachers. Through online and in-person workshops and activities, teachers will have the opportunity to explore different art forms, build a reflective process with supportive peers, and expand knowledge of ‘āina-based education. Teachers will also work in an “Ahupua‘a Hui” - teaming up with a Teaching Artist and ‘Āina-based Educator from their ahupua‘a to develop four ‘āina-based arts lesson plans. The program is open to DOE or charter school teachers grades 3-5, as well as academic coaches and administrators, with preference given to teachers from schools that are partnering with the HŌ‘Ā (Hawaiʻi Open Arts) program. Applications are currently being accepted for the 2024-25 school year.

Activities Include…

  • Kick-Off - July 15th 2024

Meet the entire HŌ‘Ā inter-island team for a day of orientation, art-making, mālama ‘āina service & collaborative lesson planning. Further meetings with your Ahupua’a Hui (consisting of Classroom Teacher(s), Teaching Artist and ‘Āina-based Educator) are scheduled as needed. (July 15th)

  • Art Nights

Make time for your own creativity as you explore the arts with professional artists. Art Nights will take place online once a quarter, with one mid-point sharing meeting in person.

  • Reflective Process

Build a reflective process with a supportive group of peers. Explore inquiry questions, try out different modes of reflection, and share your journey with the cohort. Towards the end of the school year, we will meet for a final reflection with the entire HŌ‘Ā inter-island team.

Pilina Building: Wealth in Relationships

The HŌ‘Ā program is built on strong relationships in the classroom, community, and across the pae ‘āina (archipelago of Hawai'i). We hope to foster these relationships in the ‘Āina Arts Teaching Cohort.

The program is open to DOE or charter school teachers grades 3-5, as well as academic coaches and administrators, with preference given to teachers from schools that are partnering with the HŌ‘Ā (Hawaiʻi Open Arts) program. Workshops, events, and meetings will take place after school hours and during the summer.

Each ‘Āina Arts teacher will receive a stipend of $400 upon completion of their responsibilities and deliverables.
